It’s almost impossible to mistake a residential appliance for structural steel. But Joe Cochran says that’s exactly what was happening before his custom coating division began working with PPG TrueFinish.

“A lot of people think that powder coating is just for washers and dryers,” explains Cochran, who is Vice President of the Powder Division at Thomarios in Akron, Ohio. “My needs are very different, and it helps when my supplier understands that. TrueFinish understood right away.”

Cochran’s division coats large, unwieldy structural steel pieces for utility companies and government agencies. Because many of those pieces end up straddling bridges or roadways, they must be able to withstand ultraviolet (UV) rays, salt exposure, and rough handling during installation. It’s certainly not a job for an appliance paint – but PPG’s TrueFinish zinc epoxy primer and TGIC polyesters fit his needs.

Because he spent many years working with liquid industrial paints, Cochran knows it’s harder to get an accurate color match with powder coatings than with liquid coatings.

“That makes TrueFinish even more impressive. The speed of the color match is great, and so is the delivery time,” he says.

Besides color matching, Cochran faces another big challenge: damage to the finish during installation. Fortunately, a national network of PPG TrueFinish dealers is always standing by.

“If my installers run out of touch-up paint and I can’t ship it to them, my TrueFinish rep finds a store in their area that can give it to them,” Cochran says. “Sometimes it’s ready in as little as half an hour!”

Installation isn’t the only part of the job that can be unpredictable. Cochran says a job often “grows” unexpectedly, leaving him without enough product to finish it on time. With just one phone call to his PPG TrueFinish rep, the problem is solved.
