Custom Metal Products
Custom Metal Products is located in Wilmington, NC and primarily manufactures hollow metal replacement doors and frames. The company has grown from only 10 employees in 2003 to over 70 today. They have supplied doors used in the Hudson River tunnel project in New York, at various government institutions including the US Marine barracks at Camp Lejeune, NC and even those in the NASCAR build shop of Dale Earnhardt, Inc. in Mooresville, NC.
They struggled for over a year with their former coatings supplier, wanting them to provide a waterbased product that dried fast, had good blocking resistance and would not rust in the yard before shipment to the customer.
Custom Metal Products' doors and frames are “unconditionally guaranteed against defects in workmanship and materials for 1 year from invoice date1.” A repair bill for a warranty claim could conceivably “exceed three times the cost of the original price of the door” says Bill West, Production Manager.
After completing a very thorough and detailed production line survey, the local PPG sales team in Charlotte believed that the
AQUACRON™ 390 Series Acrylic Primer would fulfill their needs with only slight modifications to the product.
Bill West said that when he “called PPG they immediately came in and dialed in the paint to the equipment.” He also “appreciates the service that the PPG rep gives us, he [the sales rep] stays until its right and cares enough to put in the time.”
Bill Dries, Plant Manager, says that “It has been a complete turnaround with what we have been doing for the last 2 years. Repair bills have significantly decreased since we switched, it’s rare that we have a paint problem now.” With this new Aquacron primer “we were able to increase throughput and decrease our repair bills.”
